Internet Computer is a blockchain aiming to turn the Internet into a decentralized network. This “World Computer” blockchain, the first of its type, can be used to create practically any online system or service without traditional IT infrastructure. How Does Internet Computer Work?

The Internet, as we know it, has a centralized architecture. Large data centers store data, which computers and other devices can access via a communication protocol. Internet Computer aims to fundamentally change this approach by adding World Computer Functionality to the Internet. This architecture will allow individual computers and small data centers to store information. These node machines are interconnected via the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), where the network’s token takes its name from.

Developers can build online systems and services using smart contracts in a decentralized Internet. This technology can enhance the security of the said systems and services, making firewalls unnecessary. Moreover, the decentralized Internet can facilitate the implementation of Web3, in which online systems and services can process cryptocurrencies, creating new economic rails. This way, new paradigms will emerge, like SocialFi, combining social media with DeFi products.

The ICP token incentivizes people to engage with the network; for instance, those hosting data on their computers get rewards in this crypto asset. ICP is also used for governance; holders can vote in critical blockchain decisions.
